X-ray Pulse Duration Control in the LCLS

چکیده
X-ray pulse duration control is critical to exploring the ultra-fast science at an x-ray freeelectron laser (FEL) facility such as the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS). The pulse length of a typical electron bunch that drives a self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) FEL is limited to the order of 100~200 fs, due to short-bunch collective interactions. Many novel schemes have been proposed to reduce the x-ray pulse duration one or two orders of magnitude below that of the electron bunch. This letter of intent describes several proposed methods and experimental plans to test the production of femtosecond and sub-femtosecond X-ray pulses from the LCLS.

Chirped-beam Two-stage Sase-fel for High Power Femtosecond X-ray Pulse Generation
We present a method for generating femtosecond duration x-ray pulses using a single-pass free-electron laser (FEL). This method uses an energy-chirped electron beam to produce a frequency-chirped x-ray pulse through selfamplified spontaneous emission (SASE). After the undulator we consider passing the radiation through a monochromator. The frequency is correlated to the longitudinal position wi...
متن کاملUnfolding X-ray spectrum in the diagnostic range using the Monte Carlo Code MCNP5
Introduction: Unfolding X-ray spectrum is a powerful tool for quality control of X-ray tubes. Generally, the acquisition of the X-ray spectrum in diagnostic radiology departments is complicated and difficult due to high photon flux. Measurement of x ray spectra using radiation detectors could not be performed accurately, because of the pulse pile up. Therefore, indirect methods...
متن کاملNumerical simulations of the hard X-ray pulse intensity distribution at the Linac Coherent Light Source
Numerical simulations of the current and future pulse intensity distributions at selected locations along the Far Experimental Hall, the hard X-ray section of the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS), are provided. Estimates are given for the pulse fluence, energy and size in and out of focus, taking into account effects due to the experimentally measured divergence of the X-ray beam, and measure...
متن کاملStart-to-End Simulations of the LCLS Accelerator and FEL Performance at Very Low Charge
The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) is an x-ray Free-electron Laser (FEL) being commissioned at SLAC. Recent beam measurements have shown that, using the LCLS injector-linac-compressors, the beam emittance is very small at 20 pC. In this paper we perform start-to-end simulations of the entire accelerator including the FEL undulator and study the FEL performance versus the bunch charge. At 20...
متن کاملAttosecond X-ray Pulses in the Lcls Using the Slotted Foil Method
A proposal has been made to generate femtosecond and sub-femtosecond x-ray pulses in the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) SASE FEL [1] by using a slotted spoiler foil located at the center of the second bunch compressor chicane [2]. This previous study highlighted a simple case, using the nominal LCLS parameters, to produce a 2-fsec FWHM, 8-keV x-ray pulse. The study also pointed out the poss...
